THA Architecture Studio
Completed in 2003
Bringing vitality to a once underutilized historic building in downtown Portland, the Balfour-Guthrie Building now houses the studio office of THA Architecture, who designed the renovation. Originally designed by architect Morris Whitehouse, the building was built during an important period of expansion in Portland from 1900 to World War I.
The space enjoys natural daylighting and views to the nearby North Park Blocks. The design expresses the historic structure of the building naturally. All of the work performed was carefully reviewed to assure compliance with the requirements of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Structures. The Balfour-Guthrie Building is the first architectural office in the nation to receive a LEED Silver. Some of the environmental improvements resulted in a 24% energy savings and a 31% water use reduction.
